STU evaluates thousands of different column dimension combinations and layouts to determine dimensions that:
- Fully comply with design code requirements
- Are economically optimized
- Provide acceptable responses in terms of story drift and torsional behavior
This process allows engineers to reach economical column dimensions in a very short time—a task that can otherwise take days or even weeks when done manually.
2️⃣ Story Drift Response and Control
STU calculates lateral story drift under conventional loading conditions and converges to a structural configuration that:
- Ensures member strength requirements
- Keeps drift values within allowable code limits
In other words, the final design is not only safe, but also reliable in lateral performance.
3️⃣ Structural Torsion Evaluation and Control
Global and relative torsion are evaluated in accordance with Iranian Codes Chapters 6 & 9 and Standard 2800.
STU calculates:
- Maximum story drift
- Average drift per story
- Torsional irregularity indices
During the optimization process, STU adjusts column dimensions to reduce the torsional ratio to an acceptable range (typically below 1.2), ensuring realistic and stable structural behavior.
Capabilities Under Development
The core engine of STU is complete, while advanced features are being added progressively. Key items in the development roadmap include:
- Response spectrum dynamic analysis
- Beam design and integration of beam dimensions into the optimization process
- Completion of moment-resisting frame design
